What You Need to Know about the International Primary Curriculum (IPC)

1 min read

The International Primary Curriculum commonly known as the IPC, is designed for children of age five to eleven. The IPC curriculum takes a thematic approach bringing together subjects under one topic. For example, younger students might cover topics such as Food, Shopping, or Transportation while older students might cover topics such as Celebrations, Climate Control or Space Exploration.

All of these topics are designed to appeal to the students’ interests and help them to learn more about the world around them. Keep in mind each learning unit brings in learning goals from other subjects like literacy, numeracy, science, and history.

It is easy for one to wonder how the IPC curriculum is implemented. Well, this curriculum has built a foundation consisting of learning goals, big ideas, the qualities the curriculum wants children to develop, key skills and essential knowledge. The IPC curriculum has provided the students with subject goals, personal learning goals and international; goals.

Subject goals look into the knowledge, skills, and understanding of the students relating to the subjects that they are learning. The knowledge that’s based on the facts and information that students are expected to learn from, skills that are based on practical abilities that students need in order to exhibit, and understanding that’s based on a deeper awareness of the key concepts that will develop the students over time.

As for the personal goals, they mainly underpin the individual qualities and dispositions that the IPC curriculum presumes students will find essential in the 21stcentury. Keep in mind there are about eight personal goals which are enquiry, resilience, morality, communication, thoughtfulness, cooperation, respect, and adaptability.

Things tend to be somewhat different with International Learning Goals. From the IPC’s perspective, needs to be specific regarding what international-mindedness means and how it can be attained in order to help the students to develop the mindset that allows them to think and act globally.

The international learning goals are quite unique to the IPC curriculum as it helps young children bring their journey towards a highly sophisticated national, international and intercultural perspective. This is essential as it can help the students to have the mindset from ‘self’ to ‘other.’ Each thematic IPC units is inclusive of an international aspect that helps the student develop a sense of ‘International-mindedness.’ No wonder you should consider enrolling your child for the IPC curriculum.
